Get To Know Betty from Mercon Specialty

Betty joins us from Guatemala, where she has recently joined us as a Specialty Coffee Coordinator. 15 years ago, Betty didn’t have any experience with coffee. She graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and began working for a coffee exporter. In her role, she established and validated operational procedures for the exporter’s lab, and the coffee shop associated with it. It was in that role where she became passionate about tasting and roasting coffee. She continued to educate herself and obtained her Q Grader license, which led to opportunities to judge in several Cup of Excellence and other private collection auctions. She continues to be passionate about discovering exceptional coffees, and that is one of the reasons we added her to our team.

One of the aspects Betty loves most about the job is connecting with producers. She says, “they have so many stories to tell and being able to contribute in any way possible to improve their quality of life is very important to me”. Helping producers tell their stories is why she became a mentor for the Grounds for Empowerment program, which offers business tools and workshops for specialty coffee women producers in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Betty is currently taking sommelier courses, primarily to add to her taster’s vocabulary and palate. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and their cats. She likes to play board games and entertain her friends and family.

Join us in welcoming Betty to the team. We are sure she will make a positive impact in Mercon Specialty and our coffees.
