July Market News & Arrivals

Mercon Specialty July Market News

What's Happening in the Market:

June began with trading of the July (KCN23) position at 179.  The price of coffee steadily declined as the position approached the First Notice Day (FND) of June 22.  Trading proceeded in the September (KCU23) position with a continued decline down to lows near the 158 mark by June 30.  During July, the market hovered in the region between 155-162.  Coffee prices have fallen to a 5 ½ month low.

Bearish to the market is the steady pace of the Brazil 23/24 crop.  The 2023/2024 harvest year is the low-yield biennium year for Brazil.  Despite being the low year, typically bullish for coffee supply and supportive of coffee prices, the forecasted harvest for 2023/2024 is still significantly large.  The market is watching the end of July for any cold snaps or weather irregularities, which could negatively impact the remainder of the harvest.  A fresh crop of high-quality Arabica is expected to begin shipping in August, with delivery to the U.S. in September.

Colombia, the second leading producer of Arabica, saw a reduction in coffee exports for June, with a 20% year-over-year (y/y) for the month.  While supply is low for Colombia, Honduras saw an increase in exports for June by 37% y/y.
