The Story Behind Grasiela Maris de Souza “Ladies of LIFT” Natural Peaberry
Nestled in the Mantiqueira Region of Minas at an elevation of about 1280 meters, the 11-hectare Fortaleza Farm is owned by the Borges Family, presently run by Grasiela and her husband Djalma.
The initial pioneer of coffee production was Djalma's grandfather, who began by carting seedlings from a nearby town in an ox-driven cart. One of his sons, Djalma's father, proceeded to grow the farm's crop and when he died in 1999, he gave part of the land to each of his children.
Upon the death of his father, Djalma inherited the farm and in 2002, in order to increase his understanding, he enrolled in Business Administration College. This was where he encountered his wife Grasiela and the couple married in 2003 and now live on the farm with their three children.
Fortaleza Farm is striving to advance the quality of their coffee and is modernizing the crops and implementing more efficient practices. Production is concentrated on specialty coffees and in doing so, Fortaleza Farm is focused on sustainable post-harvest handling.
